I wasn't going on sound alone. I was also going for the purpose of each genre.
1. Classical = music with a feeling, but not a specific feeling. More just happiness/sadness/anger. 2. Blues = music for soulpouring misery. 3. Rock = all music that can be conveyed in rock, from simple boy meets girl, to appreciation of nature, to other such things. 4. Punk = political messages or against social conformity. uses the same sounds as rock. usually identifiable when compared to regular rock, though. 5. Dance = uhh, mushrooms? sex in clubs? 6. Traditional/Folk = well, like i said, it differs from culture to culture.

I guess so, but you have to admit that it's the music as well that defines the genre. If you only went by meaning, then System of a Down would be a punk band. Which they definitely aren't.

They could be. In meaning, could be. But I would just call them rock.
And the reason I didn't put rap up there, is because it is usually a form of electronica, with people just talking over it...and it's not even musical, anyways.

Sure you can! I wrote this in a rant against the goth "genre" of music (i'm not against the "goth" subculture, i'm simply against calling it a genre of music.) It was: 1. Classical (all opera, all symphonic, all piano, etc) 2. Blues 3. Rock (Anything from Buddy Holly/Chuck Berry to...uh...mainstream poprock bands...to all forms of metal) 4. Punk (though it's close to rock, it has a different intended message, therefore, it's different) 5. Dance/Elektronik Supersonik (broma)/techno/whatever it calls itself 6. Traditional/Folk (cultural musickish stuff) These are the MAIN, TYPICAL, IDENTIFIABLE genres of music. All others are mixtures of these. These listed are the pure forms. What about Jazz?... I don't know enough about it as a whole, but I know it's definitely it's own genre. Nu-Metal, Indie, and Chillout (whatever that is) don't belong up there. And, I have to go with good ol' rock.

I consider Jazz as Classical. Sorry I didn't specify.

Oy...
I was watching Fuse, the music show. Or whatever it is. And all they show is emo/screamo/growling metal. They showed Lacuna Coil, though!

^Here's an idea. How about if you actually stop being a prick for once, and actually talk about your favourite genre - like it says in the thread title - instead of retreading the steps you have taken so many times before in complaining about something that does not affect or concern you? I seem to recall you saying that you hate whining. Well then shut up being a hypocrite.
