Answer for TheGr8Sage:
You're right! Dragonball is once the hottest anime in Asia 10 years ago. Now the crown is given to Naruto (supposed you have heard of it).
But as a group of fans of DBZ, our worship for DBZ will never change and I notice quite a proportion of nowadays teens are very interested in the DB serie anime by the help of BT downloading on internet. The extent of admiration of them can be even larger than my own generation!
Re your question of Monkey Go West (or Journey to the West). We can factually find Akira use a lot of reference of Monkey (such as characters, names, fairy items) in DragonBall (especially the anime) but the imitation totally fades from the begining of DBZ. The favor of ancient myth sharply evolves into the favor of continuously upgraded super battle!

Being the Grammar Nazi of the forum, I want to say I'm fairly impressed at your English, midnightkaka. That is all.

Yeah Ive read journey to the west and there are alot of similarities in dragon ball, but once it gets to dragonball z the mythology theme disapeares. (I think journey to the west is known as sayuki in japan). In any case one of the things I liked about journey to the west is that son wu kong (the monkey) is born from a stone egg ontop of a mountain.

Sun Wu Kong is also a real hero with his righteous fury and exciting transformation of 72 style. However, he cannot deal with every crisis on his own, everytime this happened, the Bodhisattva or other immortals will surely come and help.
In this way, Son Goku, with his supreme power which already exceeds the God and Shenron, seems more invincible than our mythic hero Sun Wu Kong. BTW. I don't think Saiyuki is a good comic for you who want to digest Journey to the West.

Not Bad but a totally different theme and philosophy from Journey to the West. I just think it's better if you read the original fiction - Journey to the West - first . Saiyuki is the Japanese spelling of Character Xi You Ji.

This may be a little off, but I'm still kinda confused by the whole DBZ wearing off in Japan thing... Maybe it was just me, but when we were in Tokyo I saw a whole bunch of Dragonball Z merchandise and etc... Maybe I just read it the wrong way. Perhaps they were merely overstocked, hehe. Anyway, I want to know, midnightkaka, do they have Prince of Tennis in China? Is it popular, is what I mean to say. I know Japanese, and I've been wanting to learn Chinese (Mandarin) and I figure that reading manga, and watching animes is a good way. If you know of a better way, could notify me? Heh, I doubt you would, so if you don't know, then don't worry.
Btw, is it just "Monkey"? Because I found a manga called Monkey, and it looked nothing like what you described... Maybe it's just me.

PsionicGenome: Yeah we have Prince of Tennis, and it's popularity can catch up with Naruto. Though I haven't read it, I know it for sure.
A better way to learn Chinese? To make friend with a Chinese who has cross-cultural experience. You can keep me in contact if you have further question. Of course, to seek for a nearby Chinese friend is more convenient and advisable.
re the name Monkey, I think Journey to the West is the univeral title. Frankly I'm quite confused with other names.
