Heres a few of my favorites :
"The Old Man and The Sea" - Ernest Hemingway (big Hemingway fan here...This one is just plain great f*cking writing...)
"1984" - George Orwell (this one sort of got me thinking about the future, and humanity; that sort of stuff)
"The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy" (trilogy) - Douglas Adams (I love these books man..)
"The Grapes Of Wrath" - John Steinbeck (just a great classic set in the great depression)
"The Catcher In The Rye" - J.D. Salinger (*shrugs* I think everyone can relate to this, at one time or another)
"Candide" - Voltaire (hilarious old satire that dispels the idea that "everything is for the best" read it if you despise super-optimists, lol)
"The Divine Comedy" - Dante Alighieri (I'm not even sure if I fully got this one, but I remember it as rather interesting; definitely not a casual read though...lots of interpreting and such)
These are just the first that popped into my head...the list goes on...and on...

If you’re talking about the “Hatchet” book I know of …. That is a good and interesting book. I had it as a class in 5th grade. It was realistic to the whole idea of being on an island. If you like that book then I suggest the book, “The Cay” as well.

I've never heard of it. What's it about?

They're basically a series of books that center around a planet called Pern, where there are humans (or close enough to humans) and dragons, and the humans...umm, ride dragons, of course. They have to protect themselves from Threads that come from the sky (burning comets, really) and it's really cool what all the dragons can do.
*shrugs* I liked 'em.

Cool. My sister likes a similar story, called Eragon. I might read it sometime.
EDIT: I just don't understand people who prefer the Herry Potter movies to the books...

Anything by Clive Barker... though I have only seen his movies, and bits in pieces of some of them... errr... cant remember most of them actually! Anyways he is an awesome creative writer of horror. Probably the best of this generation! Ever heard of: Cabal, The hellbound heart, The last Illusion? His movies based on these books are- Book title: Cabal and Movie title: Nightbreed
Book title: The hellbound heart and Movie title: Hellraiser
Book title: The last illusion and Movie title: Lord of illusions
all three are great movies! He also wrote a bood which soon became a movie called candyman! "Candyman" you might be familiar with... ;D
