More news in regarding Xbox 2...
"More dark snippets from the rumour mill today, this time concerning Xbox 2's hard drive capabilities ...again. This is a subject that has been much discussed before, with various dark hints, conjecture and additional rumours adding petrol to the bonfire. Will Xbox 2have a hard disk? Will it not? Will it be removable, will it be fixed? Will it come in a number of flavours and sizes depending on which Xbox 2 edition you buy?
The list of hard drive rumours is almost endless but there's further speculation from US magazines today saying that Xbox 2 will not only have a hard drive, but that it will be removable and portable, so that you can carry around all your favourite games, saves and preferences, as well as MP3 files and video, possibly slotting them into other Xbox 2s to share this stuff with your friends and relations. Our response? Well it's certainly a possibility. For our money Xbox 2 boasting a hard drive is almost a no-brainer, as it is offers one of the original Xbox's most significant advantages in this current generation, allowing you to store additional content, being key to Live and now so cheap, it won't significantly add to production costs. On the other hand: a portable hard drive? Well it's feasible but not necessarily so. Why? Well broadband's so quick now you can share a lot of this stuff over the ether anyway, so why make your HD portable unless you want people to actually physically lug their digital data around or want to integrate it into another portable device?"

Hmm, interesting. Almost makes you think that rumors of no hard drive have arisen because Microsoft decided to have a removable hard drive in the machine. Some bozo might have spread some rumor that the HD was actually being sold or not included, because they didn't get their facts stratight.

It seems like we are getting more Xbox 2 news each week. This morning a list of all the companies commited to Xbox 2 has been leaked...
2KGames Activision Inc. Atari Inc. Bandai Co. Ltd. Bethesda Softworks LLC Capcom Co. Ltd. Codemasters Software Company Ltd. Eidos Inc. Electronic Arts Inc. FromSoftware Inc. KOEI Co. Ltd. Konami LucasArts Majesco Entertainment Midway Games Inc. Namco Hometek Inc. Phantagram Co. Ltd. Rockstar Games Sega Inc. Tecmo Inc. THQ Inc. Ubisoft Entertainment Vivendi Universal Games Inc. Webzen Inc. BioWare Corp. Bizarre Creations Ltd. Bungie Studios Epic Games Inc. FASA Studio Game Republic Inc. Lionhead Studios Ltd. Mistwalker Q Entertainment Inc. Rare Ltd. Real Time Worlds
No real surprises here, as most of the developers are long standing Microsoft supporters though it is intriguing to see that Capcom - a previous Sony and Nintendo stalwart, are attracted by the lure of Microsoft's next-generation lucre.
About the only really big name missing is SquareEnix, though it's possible there'll be further additions to the roster and possibly a few surprise revelations at this year's E3.

Just to add a little more info to this thread, I heard from a friend earlier this week, who actually works at my local Electronic Boutique shop, that after there next shipment of Xboxes. There will be no more. Supposedly Microsoft is telling the big retailers to pull Xbox hardware and merchandising out of their Q4 inventories and to make way for the next-gen Xbox console. So in other words, the remaining million or so Xboxes left in will be the last produced. After those are sold, only its successor will be in production.
In reflection, this all makes sense. With E3 rolling around only a few weeks away, the Xbox is most likely due for a price cut. Another cut to perhaps $99.99 or lower, would cause another boom in Xbox hardware sales for awhile. This however could also begin to eat in to its successor's market, something Microsoft will make sure does not happen.
More detail will most likely be layed out during E3. Hopefully my price-cut guess will be true, then I just might finally buy one...

I've also heard rumors similar to that. Although yesterday, M$ made an announcement saying they plan to support Xbox until 2007. So i doubt production will stop indefinatley on Xbox, maybe just stop for the Q4 season to help produce Xbox 2 at a faster rate.

Yeah, they may just hold off for a while. But also, maybe they predict Xbox 2 will be a huge success and would rather just focus on the next gen system's development.

It really depends if Xbox 2 is backwards compataible. If it is then it would be possible to just drop the Xbox and focus on one console, but if it isn't i dont think they could do that.

Look at this, about Square Enix........ It is old news though.... Square Enix Considers Xbox 2 By Chris Faylor -- News Writer Published 1:21 PM CDT, June 29, 2004 The groundwork for the next Xbox is being laid in Japan, though Capcom doesn't seem too happy. In a recent Bloomberg report, a Square Enix representative revealed that the company is currently considering developing titles for the next Xbox. The same article also reveals that Microsoft has recently made offers to Capcom that would help to recoup the development and distribution costs associated with developing more Xbox-specific titles. Capcom has since rejected these offers, expressing a lack of interest in developing further Xbox titles. FULL STORY

Shows how things can change. In that report, Capcom didnt want to know about Xbox 2, but now they have confirmed they are supporting Xbox 2 along with every other big name developer. The only one thats missing is Square Enix. I think they want to see how Xbox 2 perfroms first, before commiting themselves.

More info regarding Xbox 2 has surfaced. First up, a surposed leak of a prototype Xbox 2 pic has swarmed the web. From the pics below, we can see the control is similar to the current Xbox controller S, but with the black and white buttons replaced with shoulder buttons. The controls also dont have any wires which suggest wireless controllers as standard. A rumor to back this up suggests batteries wont be needed, M$ will provide a lead that connects to the console to charge the control up. The remaining info is in regards to the M$ viral site that counts down to the Xbox 2 MTV presentation. The site has revealed what is suggested to be the first image of Project Gotham Racing 3.

I found some info! ;D: Xbox 360 Update 4.13.05 Ourcolony and GamesIndustry leak new information. by David Clayman
April 13, 2005 - The advertising pioneers at 4orty2wo Entertainment are at it again. Recently, Microsoft launched another viral campaign which leads to snippets of information regarding the next Xbox. These viral campaigns are a form of alternate reality game (ARG) that create in- depth "narratives" that ultimately draw the players of the game towards a reward wrapped in an advertisement. Until the game ends on May 12th we will be following the progress of this campaign along with new Xbox 360 information.
Fans of Halo 2 will remember the last 4orty2wo campaign that was based around Ilovebees.com. This URL was released along with the Halo 2 trailer in theaters and led millions of visitors on a wild goose chase. People who followed the game to its completion were given access to events on November 4th, where they were able to play Halo 2 before its release to the general public. 42 Entertainment's web site claims they create large scale "search operas," designed to cause consumers to look for the product.
The new campaign also starts with a website called Ourcolony.net, which hooks visitors with some cryptic blurbs of information, images, and some riddles. There is an image gallery which features the website's logo in various locations around the country. The logo is an ant. This not only alludes to the name of the site, but follows the "hive" allusions in the ilovebees.com campaign, and the general behavior of consumers who play the game. At GDC this year, J. Allard sported a t-shirt bearing the ant logo, and sparked some of the first discussions relating Microsoft to Ourcolony.net. It appears that bugs are the best way to create a buzz.
Gamers are encouraged to register with the site and either join a colony, or create their own. It is heavily emphasized that only players who work together and spread the message will be successful in advancing the game. The site features a leader board that awards points to colonies that sign up more members and answer questions correctly.
Like the previous ARG, Ourcolony.net features a timer that counts down to May 12th. Up until this morning participants could only speculate at what would occur when the clock reached zero. Then, Peter Moore, corporate vice-president of worldwide marketing and publishing for Xbox, announced that the Xbox 2 will be revealed to the world on MTV on May 12th. You can read more about the recently announced event here.
Yesterday, Ourcolony.net presented a challenge that rewarded people with a high resolution jpeg of a car. Gamers immediately began to speculate that this image is a sneak preview of a next generation racing game, with the most likely candidate being Project Gotham Racing 3. More telling, is the fact that the car is a Ferrari 360, pointing to further confirmation of the name and the next-gen system.
This morning, another bomb was dropped when Gamesindustry.biz announced that they have confirmed the name "Xbox 360" along with the look of the new system. The article cites British sources who gained access to Microsoft marketing documents. The console is rumored to be either white or silver, which jives with the previously released controller images from Ourcolony.net. The site also states that the console is concave in the center and can stand on its side much like the PS2. Of course, Microsoft refused to comment on rumors and speculation.
A Ferrari 360.
Past information that has been derived from the website includes two small images that are supposedly sections of the new Xbox controller. These rewards were accessed by colonies that were able to recruit a large number of members. The beauty of the marketing campaign is that it rewards participants who spread the word about the product. The site also features a large globular flash image that on certain pages, resembles the power button on the current Xbox.
When combined, the small controller images resemble sections of a blurry controller image that has recently been circulating on the web. The Ourcolony images show a design similar to that of the Controller S. In the blurry image it appears that the "start" and "back" buttons have been removed along with the black and white buttons on the opposite side. There are also shoulder buttons visible just above the triggers, which may be transplanted black and white buttons. Whether or not this is an accurate photo of the next-gen Xbox controller is anyone's guess.
Images from Ourcolony.net
We'll have more information on the viral campaign, the future of Xbox hardware, and next generation software as E3 looms closer. SOURCE: IGNI hear in a lot of video game forums that XBOX 360 (sounds like a box and a circle to me) is now the official name for Xbox 2, I don't know why they wouldn't just call it Xbox 2 . Anyways, it's looking good for the Xbox 360 so far!
