Microsoft announced last week that it will recall 14.1 million power cords for the Xbox after a defect caused resulted in burnt carpets and minor singe burns on consumers. The recall applies to Xboxes made before October 23, 2003 in the U.S. and Asia and January 13, 2004 for continental Europe. According to customer service and warranty repair data, 1 in 10,000 consoles were affected--seven of those cases resulting in minor burns as users attempted to touch the cord. Consoles manufactured after that date do not face that problem. With a worldwide installed base of 20+ million, the recall is a substantial one for Microsoft, who declined to comment on the costs of all the replacements. Customers who have affected Xboxes can request a new power cord through the offically site
