Almost as funny as Ranma 1/2 but doesn't quite make it
Tenchi Masaki is a normal high school student whose life is changed forever when he accidentally releases an ancient demon which was trapped in his family’s shrine. The demon, Ryoko quickly develops an attraction to young Tenchi and rather than ravage and destroy the world, she decides it would be much better to stay with him instead. On the hunt for Ryoko is Princess Aeka of the Jurai royal family, her sister Sasami, Agent Mihoshi of the Galaxy Police and Ryoko‘s creator, the brilliant scientist Washu. In between all this a massive love triangle forms between Aeka, Ryoko and Tenchi, bringing a lot of light-hearted romantic hijacks and action into the series. Tenchi Muyo! Is a romantic comedy, and many of the plots revolve around Aeka’s and Ryoko’s attempt to make Tenchi fall in love with them. But in addition to this there is a larger storyline for each season, usually involving the Jurai Royal Family and it’s attempts to be taken over by the evil Kagato.
What sets Tenchi Muyo! Apart from many other anime is that each new series (Tenchi Muyo! Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo) is a retelling of the story, complete with new characters and a slightly different storyline. Originally a six episode OVA series released in 1991-1992, Tenchi Muyo! was quickly expanded to a full 13 episodes and two specials. Following the enormous success of the OVA, many subsequent movies, TV series and spin-offs were created, the most recent being the TV series Tenchi GXP.
Tenchi Muyo! Made it’s debut on American televisions in 1998 as part of Cartoon Network’s Toonami lineup. This made the show enormously popular in the United States and other English-speaking countries, and is still considered to be one of the best shows to ever air as part of Toonami. Also, it spawned countless imitators, attempting to capitalize on the idea of a meek young male being surrounded by beautiful and powerful females; something which has become common in many popular anime such as Love Hina.
