Ways to tell.
1.the show will be mostly based for children and young adults with nothing to do
2.the animation will be completely different to japanese anime for example, characters will be surprisingly ugly and stupid looking, not very well drawn and never move
3.the characters will never move during a large speach
4.the characters are always children
5.the theme music will be terrible
6.most of the shows funding will usually go towards cheap and useless 3d animation which surprisingly enough doesnt really need to be their
7.the whole series will usually derive around a card game or other kind of game
8.all of the voices will usually match their characters although will not keep in sync with their lips
9.most of the female cast will usually have very large tits at a young age (maybe 13-14 but if you think about it japanese kids usually dont even develope busts even at a later age so its unrealistic compaired to the setting, dragon ball/z was an exception)
10.the artistry will completely change, in jap animes the artistry is usually flawless
11.bad storylines
12.no sex appeal what-so-ever
13.the setting will usually take place only in japan
14.the characters seem to refer to japanese phrases quite a lot but only if its to do with fighting, the characters will repeat catchphrases and their is usually a really boring narrator
15.finnally the sign saying 'BLUE WATER STUDIOS' or 'TOEI' or even 'FUNIMATION' will usually give it away

Another one: If the show has a weird voice trying to rap in the ending theme song. The chorus will usually shout the name of the show an annoying number of times...

Not true at all, the voices that don't follow the anime is because its not american made or dubbed differently then its intended to for editing purposes. I personally support american made animation because I feel they have a seperate style that I wish the better animators of Japan, etc. would incorporate. The thing that irritates me about japanese anime is that every personality and emotion is the same for every show, just incorporated differently. And they throw together a severely off the wall world. For example, Naruto (They have electricity, television, lights, etc, yet no guns) I don't personally go for anime that has a modern theme, but I do prefer one with a consistent theme which us based anime usually try to follow.
But in the end, the real bothersome thing I find is communication. In anime, someones entire intension has to be expressed in the middle of every fight to add drama. Its inebidable, you can't ever escape the "explanation/storytelling" of anime. Kenshin is natorious for this, and it drives me nuts. But one thing I noticed, once you start watching the subtitle jap episodes, there is no going back to dub versions, at least not for me

I didn't know they were American though, coz I don't care at all about them. But there's one American show that seems to be pretty cool: Megas XLR. I haven't seen it but some people have told me that it's pretty awesome and from what I see the animation is nothing as bad as Beyblade and such. And about the Naruto thing of having electricity and such but no guns, I don't think that's a bad thing. It's like on DBZ where they have flying cars but still dinosaurs still exist. That's just the authour using his imagination and showing another way the world could be. It's just that, IMAGINATION. When we watch stuff like that, we have to be open minded about the authors vision of things.

it doesnt really matter.
one more way you can usually tell is that the characters will usually use some weird action which doesnt make sense and is overly exagerated like say in this one anime called chaolin showdown, before the characters start pummeling their enemies they would usually say the name of an element and the screen would show what that element is but for some reason that element doesnt come into the scene, i just think whats the point.
a classic example of an american made anime is teen titans, you may not think its an anime but the whole japanese intro gives it away.
(have any of you ever thought why starfire has the worlds smallest skirt yet somehow it never reveals much, it just really occurs to me often)
