Please God, let me not be the only one here who has heard of this!
Fooly Cooly (Furi Kuri, FLCL) by Studio Gainax released the first of six OAV parts in 2000. The odd, fast paced story mixed with stunning animation makes this short OAV series truly memoriable. Wacky characters in a strange town of Mabase with the industrial Medical Mechanica plant shaped like a giant iron will leave viewers scratching their heads.
Naota is a typical grade school student who wishes something interesting would happen in his boring hometown. Hanging out with his older brother's girlfriend, Samejima Mamimi, by the river was his usual activity. Enter Vespa riding, bass guitar toting mystery woman named Haruko. She bashes Naota in the head with her guitar causing robots and other bizarre items to start emerging out of his head. Not only have these strange things started occurring but the once quiet Medical Mechanica plant has started working again. This is only the beginning of the wildly unusual things to come in Naota's once boring life.
The popularity of the series resulted in a manga adapted from the anime written by Hajime Ueda. Manic animation, fast moving nonsensical dialog and fighting giants robots with guitars makes Fooly Cooly a unique anime. Fooly Cooly was an instant cult classic for lovers of bizarre and weird anime.
