WARNING: The following story may offend more wussier sensitive readers.
Rathe: Chapter One
A scorched landscape, void of any plants, water or mammals. On it’s surface three pairs of feet were walking away from town, various Swords and Guns in their possession. Each of them carrying a large amount of dried food and a cantine filled with water from the town well. Each of them walking towards their goal, The Tower Of Rathe. The place from which an immortal being commands an army of heartless Demons moulded in his own image and rules the planet with an iron fist. A planet he conquered in a hostile take over many generations ago and a planet he may keep control of for many more generations to come.
The little wind that was blowing that afternoon offered no relief to the travelers who by now were all suffering from sun burn, the little headwear they had on their heads offering little protection from the planets suns. Before the monster had taken over there was only one sun hanging in the sky but now another had joined it. This one much closer to the planet than the previous one.
Many people have speculated where this being that now rules the planet had come from. Some claim he is an alien, others say he is a man who wished for immortality and the strength of a God from an alternate world who decided he would much rather have control of this world. No matter where people think he is from though they all agree on one thing. He had turned the planet, that at one time had been green and full of life, filled with animals, lakes and forests as far as the eye could see, into as close to a living Hell as the planet could get.
Some of the people living in the few scattered villages that were left on Rathe couldn’t handle the fact that they were forced to live under the control of such a cruel tyrant and had decided they’d rather die. Something very easy to do as most of the villages had at least one Demon in them at all times. The Demons even made a game of it at times, killing the humans in the most creative ways they could think of, the winner getting the meat from the carcasses. A few of the villagers who chose to die even went as far as force their families to die with them, even if their families would have rather lived and fought. Most people who attempted to fight ended up dying in battle though and like the villagers who begged for death eventually became food for the demon army of the immortal to devour on their treks across the desert. But that never stopped people from trying.
There have also been many who attempted to reach The Tower but they never succeeded. The furthest anybody had ever gotten was the creature who guarded the first checkpoint the immortal had set up. These three felt they had an advantage though, unlike the others who have tried to reach the tower in the past these three were not only confident that they would reach it, but they were confident they could climb the steps of the tower’s long winding stair case and kill the immortal.
How they hoped to kill an immortal nobody knew. The three were thought to be, by many of the townsfolk they told of their plan, crazy. But it didn’t matter to them. As far as they were concerned they were destined to end the incredibly long reign of terror that the planet had been plunged into and would never be convinced otherwise.
-
It was late into the afternoon when the three arrived at the village of Chtulu and when they got there they realised most of the villagers were indoors, attempting to escape from the hot sun. A few villagers were outside though but by the looks of it they were never going to be able get back inside. Sun or no sun they were part of that afternoon’s Demon feast. Three people had already been devoured as bits and pieces of shoes and bone remained laying around but there were still some people alive. A man, a woman and four children. The travelers knew what was going on and sprang into action.
One of them pulled out two guns, he wasn’t sure what type of guns they were, he just somewhat jokingly referred to it as the ‘Demon Blasters’, and pulled the triggers. The loud explosion of the gun firing was heard and the heads of one of the demons blew clear off while the others one’s knee had been blown apart separating his calf from his thigh. He pointed his gun downward and shot the now one-legged demon again, this time in the head, killing it instantly and spraying the demon‘s dark read blood all over the ground below, some of the blood splattering on his pants.
As this was going on another one of the travelers had pull out a sword and a small dagger, quickly removing the hands from one of the demons with her sword she buried the dagger into the skull of another, ignoring the spray of blood and the maddening howl of pain that came out when she removed it. The handless demon went to try and kick her but she avoided his foot threw her dagger into its throat, hitting it right in the wind pipe causing it to gasp for breath as it fell to the ground below. Not taking any chances she swung her sword at it again, this time removing the top of it’s skull.
The others two demons ran off realising they were outnumbered and outmatched, taking the bodies of their fallen comrades with them. They were still hungry and they knew there would be no more food for miles.
One of the people, the man, the travelers had just saved went to talk to the third traveler, the one who had done nothing during the battle, and tell him to thank the other two but when he got close enough the third traveler pulled out a gun and fired at point blank range, caving the man’s chest in. As he fell to the ground one of the other travelers turned his head and the woman and children all bursts into tears.
“What the hell are you doing Laotsu!?” The traveler who had used the gun shouted running over to him. “We just went out of our way to save these people and you blow one of them straight to hell!”
The third traveler, Laotsu glared at the other traveler then looked down at the man he had just killed. “It was obvious what was going on Kane. He had just put himself and his family up for the Demon feast. If he had just been an innocent victim out for a stroll with his family that just got caught at the wrong place at the wrong time I‘d let him live but any man who wants the life of both himself and his family to end then changes his mind when he notices how frightening it is doesn’t deserve to walk on the same planet we do.”
The female traveler looked up at Laotsu as the other male traveler, Kane went to comfort the wife and children of the man his friend had just killed.
“What makes you think they weren’t just innocent bystanders Laot?” She demanded. “What could have possibly made you think that man had volunteered himself and his family to be offerings at the feast!?”
“The demons were going to kill and eat them last, that way they could see the fate their loved one bestowed upon them so the last moments of their lives will be filled both terror and heartbreak. That’s always how they do it, you saw how many there were. If they weren’t doing that the other two would have already eaten the children. You should know I wouldn’t kill a man unless I felt I had to Kamiha.”
“But you didn’t have to!” The wife of the man just killed screamed walking up to Laotsu. “As soon as he saw the first man killed he tried to get us away from the demons! He offered to find other townspeople to switch with us! He did everything he could to save us you son of a cruel girl and you just-”
She suddenly stopped talking when she felt one of Laotsu’s guns up against her forehead. She began to sputter and apologise for what she said but Laotsu shook his head and roostered his gun. The woman looked towards Kane and Kamiha and the two of them were just standing there. One of the woman’s children, a boy who looked to be no older than six was about to run over but Kamiha stopped him.
The woman continued to beg to Laotsu but he just kept his gun up against her forehead. She tried kicking him and that was the final straw. He pulled the trigger as his companions turned their heads and the heads of the woman’s children. Nothing happened though. No explosion was heard. It was a trick, or so she believed. The woman opened her eyes and noticed Laotsu was no longer standing in front of her. He had gone back to join his two companions. The three talked amongst themselves for a little bit as the children ran back to their mother. A few minutes later Kamiha and Kane walked up to the woman, looks of sympathy on their faces.
“Listen, we’re sorry about your husband ma’am but we can’t let people like that live. We did once before in our home village and, well, in the end we were the only one’s left.” Kane told her.
