The national grid was seriously drained over the weekend as the internet went into overdrive after a forum member at Nintendo Power claimed to have information regarding Nintendo's new console, the Revolution.
According to the post, the Revolution would "utilize gyros in its controllers" and would also have dual processors. The forum member went on to say that the Revolution would have broadband and that "Nintendo has an online strategy in development. It will be implemented on the DS first." This reflects the comments made by Shigeru Miyamoto several months ago, after the Mario creator suggested that online gaming would come to the DS sooner than Nintendo's home consoles.
Apparently there are no plans to link the DS and the Revolution, but considering the fairly lacklustre response GBA-GC link-up has had over the years this isn't surprising. However, the Revolution will reportedly have four controller ports and a hard drive, with "things like Dolby Digital 5.1 and high def monitor support included".
The mysteriously well-informed poster also went on to rebuff claims that there will be a virtual reality headset, but suggested that the Revolution would be backwards compatible with GameCube games and would use HD-DVD format rather than the Blu-Ray technology favoured by rival Sony.
The controllers are supposedly not going to be wireless, although wireless controllers will be made available to those who want them, plus the system will allegedly launch with a Mario game (no surprises there, then). Work on a Zelda game and a Super Smash Bros title is also reportedly underway.
Finally, the forum user's "source" suggested that the "revolutionary" aspect of the Revolution is "nothing 'new' technically speaking. It's just something that hasn't really been applied to videogames yet," and went on to say: "touching is good but feeling is better." Make of that what you will. Could it be heat sensors? Or possibly a new type of rumble feature? Who knows? Nobody for sure until E3 in May.
The forum member refused to reveal the source of the information, so we do recommend that you take this news with a hefty pinch of salt.
