Missing all that San Andreas speculation doing the rounds before it hit shelves? Get ready for some more. Rockstar has announced that it will be bringing a new Grand Theft Auto game and Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition to PSP.
Both games are slated for release around the time of the system's launch in the US and UK, currently expected to be mid to late March.
The developer had previously indicated that it was working on 2 games for Sony's handheld at its Leeds studio, but this is the first confirmation of the titles.
The PSP version of Grand Theft Auto (that's all it's called at the moment) is an all-new adventure set in Liberty City, the scene of Grand Theft Auto 3's crimewave, and is being developed in conjunction with Rockstar North, the team behind the PS2, Xbox and PC versions of GTA.
And, er... That's all we have right now. When we contacted Rockstar to squeeze out more details we were told they had "no more information at the moment, but information will be forthcoming in the future."
Which means we must speculate, and speculate we will. The first question is whether GTA on PSP will be 3D - we think so, given Rockstar president Sam Houser's statement: "Bringing two of our most successful game franchises to this thrilling new platform not only gives us an opportunity to create a new dimension for these already extraordinary series but also allows us to begin to explore the full potential of the PSP handheld system."
Given the technical achievement of stuffing the state of San Andreas into a PS2 we have full confidence that Rockstar will be able to realise a fully 3D city on PSP. Whether Liberty City will appear exactly as it did in GTA3 is not known, and it'll be interesting to see what Rockstar do with the timeframe, main character and storyline. Let the rampant internet rumours begin! (Again!)
Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition is a slightly easier prospect to pin down. The PS2 and Xbox version (click here for screens and info) of the hip hop-styled street racer is due out in March, promising a fleet of pimped out cars and bikes you'll be able to chuck through the streets of San Diego, Detroit and Atlanta. Expect the PSP version to be a slightly scaled back version in the same way as EA's Need for Speed: Rivals is a scaled back version of Underground 2.
Rockstar are certainly chuffed with the PSP. Speaking of the development process Sam Houser said, "Sony's extremely impressive technology has allowed Rockstar Leeds to do more on a handheld machine than we could have ever imagined. We are very excited for gamers to experience these two genre-defining franchises in a fashion that could have never before been possible on a portable system."
No doubt Sony are just as pleased: as the handheld battle between their handheld and Nintendo's DS heats up, a GTA game could well be the killer app PSP needs to gain the edge.
