I notice in the social security thread there were a few viewpoints regarding gay marriage. Thus I thought I'd give the subject it's own thread.
Here's my viewpoint:
For a long time I was against gay marriage, in a way I still am, but in a way I'm not.
Marriage is the biggest contradiction of the speration of church and state because marriage is a major religious aspect that is government sanctioned and supported.
Yet once we seperate this intertwined fiasco, we see that the bulk of the insitution that is marriage is composed of various religious overtones that govern it's sanctity.
Thus I believe religion should dictate the terms of "marriage." In this sense homosexuals should not be allowed to "marry" because the religious overtones do not allow such unions.
To force a church to recognize such a union is unfair, such force would be constituted a form of religious persecution.
Yet all men and woman should be granted equality, thus I feel that civil unions for homosexuals should be sought.
A civil union would also be a governemnt sanctioned and supported institution, but without the religious overtones.
However, if a religion exists (or comes into being) that sanctions and governs gay marriage, then that marriage should be deemd fit and honored by the US government.
Not too long ago, l felt any aspect of gay marraige was wrong, mostly because it is frowned upon in the bible. Then one day it occured to me that God knows what he's doing. But I don't mean this in a sense that I feel God supports gay marriage, I mean this in a sense that I feel it impossible to fool around with God's word.
An example of this is the fact that alot of gay couples consist of a mate with role similar to that of a male and a mate with a role similar to that of a female. By nature the couple becomes male and female. Thus given evolution (yes I believe in evolution and creation - they compliment on another,) the couple will eventually genetically become male and female once again. Hence God's word is adhered to one way or another.
Thus I no longer bare any discontment for gay unions, but I do feel that other people's religious views should be repsected and as such it is best tfor the government to only sanction gay unions as an equality to gays.
As for why this is an isssue in modern society, the truth is the government is concerned about the fact that most of your generation supports gay marraige. The government feels that your generational viewpoints will eventually abolish the thin line that seperates modern morals and lewdness. As such they feel compelled to react and that is why they are moving to ban gay marriage.
To keep your generation from over turning this possible amendment (banning gay marriage) they (the government) are willing to grant equality in civil unions.
Basically the youth of today is playing chess with the US government and the governement just about has all of you at check.
