Now come on, are they really that important, don't get this confused with the singing, that is important, it's what the singer sings about that I dont think is important.
I can see someone liking a song more than they would normally if they like or relate to the lyrics, but thats not why I listen to music.

Lyrics are really important. I mean, to be fair, in a song everything is important. But would you listen to a song promoting, oh, say, child porn even if it was a good singer and a good tune? No. And although it is the tune that first pulls me in, its the lyrics that either involve me or push me away.

The first music didn't have lyrics in it, I'm thinking. You never needed a singer to express a feeling, that's what music was. Now, as I've stated in a small essay I wrote called " The Definition of Music", with our advanced technology of these days, our attention spans have significantly lowered. Thus, we only care for our average 3 minutes and twenty-one seconds of sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll.
Music that we have now, with our putting words to the music, help express a more specific idea or thought that could only be conveyable in words, rather than notes. You can feel sadness through notes, happiness, all the major emotions. But some things like political oppression and restraint of moral or wild freedom are, mostly, only thoughts that can be conveyed and shown through words.
That's what lyrics are for.

Yeah, but thats preaching. The definition of music does not involve lyrics, they just seem to attract a certain adience.

Well, I was talking about how music has changed and evolved so that it seems the only music most people tend to listen to is music with lyrics. Actually, I should say de-evolved...now THAT would be preaching. And the full title of the article, actually, was "The Definition of Music from a Lover." That is, a lover of music and art. So. You won't get all gripey about it. And I was wondering if we could post some of our favorite lyrics up?

If I like a song for the music, I really won't mind the lyrics, unless they sound completely stupid...or say stuff that I find really repulsive.
In the other hand, if I find a song with good lyrics, but with horrible music, the lyrics won't make me listen to the song...

Like I said, tune pulls you in, lyrics hold you. And I mostly agree with Fluffy in that emotion can be conveyed through notes while a message can only be carried through lyrics. But I don't consider that de-evolving. No, it is evolving. If the first music had no words then music with words is evolution. Its the next stage.

I agree lyrics aren't what make the song.
But, anyone can tell you that lyricists like Dylan certainly had an impact upon society.
It's all art though. So...*shrugs*I won't say lyrics aren't important. Bad art doesn't say anything or have any kind of real content.
